Mako - Inshore Fishing

FAQ's

Answers to most common questions.

FAQ’s: Answers to the questions most frequently asked by our guests.

Offshore Fishing: Trolling. The boat fishes in deep water and moves constantly at about six to seven knots. In a mere half day of fishing you can get anything from mahi mahi, tuna, wahoo, sailfish, white marlin & blue marlin.

Inshore Fishing: Trolling and/or casting.  Fly fishing is available for clients who bring their own equipment.  We fish in the reef-protected Punta Cana and Juanillo area aboard our Mako 19’ bay boat. This is the perfect trip for families or those tentative about offshore fishing or prone to seasickness.  Target species include yellowtails, pompano, permit, and jacks.  It should be pointed out that snook, tarpon, and bonefish can be found but are not the norm.

Offshore fishing:  Emily and Lady Lola.

The most comfortable vessel in our fleet, the Emily is a 53′ Viking equipped with top-notch equipment and spacious facilities.  She features air conditioning indoors with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an upper galley, and a large salon.  Up to 6 passengers.

The latest member of our fleet, the Lady Lola is a 42′ Bertram equipped with top-notch equipment and comfortable facilities. She has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a galley, and a spacious salon with satellite radio and TV, all deliciously air conditioned as well.  Up to 4 passengers.

Both vessels feature professional fighting chair, high-quality rods and reels, and natural bait complemented by eye-catching artificial lures and teasers that will provide you with the highest quality fishing experience.

Inshore Fishing: Mako

Our inshore fishing and beach boat, the Mako, is a 19′ bay boat made for family fun.  We have four spinning rods with artificial jigs that we use for trolling the calm and reef-protected waters in Punta Cana and Cap Cana.  Up to 4 passengers.

Offshore Fishing:  Prices include captain, mate, all bait and tackle, water, soda, Gatorade, beer, and snacks.  6-hour charters include ham and cheese sandwiches.  8+ hour charters include lunch and additional snacks.  You are welcome to bring additional food and drinks on board.  Price also includes round trip transportation between your lodging and Cap Cana Marina if you are staying within the Punta Cana/Bávaro area; please confirm with your booking manager.

Inshore fishing: Price of your charter includes captain, all bait and tackle, water, soda, Gatorade, and beer.  6-hour charters include a ham and cheese sandwich.  You are free to bring additional food and beverage on board.  Note that inshore charters do not include transportation, but it can be arranged with your booking manager.

The deposit for booking is 25% of your total charter fee.  Please contact us for payment options.

If there is inclement weather, the Dominican Navy “closes” the marinas and does not let any boats leave. In the unlikely case that this happens, we would try to reschedule the charter, depending on your (and our) availability. If this is not possible, we would return your 25% booking deposit.  With the exception of our inshore charters, we do not cancel for rainy/overcast weather.

If you cancel for any other reason between the time of booking and 72 hours before the trip, we also return your deposit. If you cancel after that (or in the case of a “no-show”), we keep the deposit.

We do not give refunds or discounts due to seasickness, so if someone in the group is prone to motion sickness we always recommend taking some kind of medication or alternative precaution. We do not supply motion sickness medication on board.

Emily 53-foot Viking: Departing from the Cap Cana Marina in the heart of Punta Cana D.R., we ride past the turquoise waters on the way to the fishing grounds and we begin fishing only twenty five minutes from the dock. We put our lines out as soon as we reach the clean, deep water that lies along the east coast of the island, on the Atlantic side. At that point, you are fishing in water over a hundred fathoms deep. During a half-day we may stay close to shore or go out from five to ten miles, depending on where the captain thinks the fish will be biting. There are sea mounts and other underwater structures that produce great fishing in some spots but the experience & the bite is our best weapon.

Mako 19′: We are based in Cap Cana Marina (just 10 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport) and fish in the reef-protected Punta Cana and Juanillo area aboard our Mako 19’ bay boat. This is the perfect trip for families or those tentative about offshore fishing or prone to seasickness. Kids and adults will have a blast in these calm and shallow waters!

We release all billfish (offshore fishing) and all inshore species.  If you catch fish that is good to eat (mahi mahi, wahoo, or tuna), you may arrange with the mate to fillet you some to take back to the hotel or villa chef for your dinner that night. Naturally, what you cannot use, please leave for the mate on the boat to eat himself or to share.

Yes, and it is a great idea.  Even if you released your catch, we can arrange for a “replica mount”, something conservationists appreciate.  Please ask the captain for more information on taxidermy.

The Atlantic Ocean is seldom calm and the trade winds that cool our islands keep the waves active. At times, there is substantial movement on the boat. However, since our boat is large, the effect of the waves’ action is diminished. We do suggest that those guests who may be prone to motion sickness take precautions ahead of time.
